Home > Our philosophy and vision
Our business began in 1917 by Rikusaburo Okude, the Kiji-shi (wood artisan) of Yamanaka lacquerware. Later, in 1977, the second Akio Kunugi established SEIGADO Co., Ltd. Since then, we have been producing lacquerware. We also have been making efforts to sell them wholesale not only in the domestic market but also in the North America and the Europe markets. And now we are going to reach the 100th year of our business in 2 years. On this milestone occasion, SEIGADO is going to move into the next age, the second new stage of our business. We consider that it’s our mission in the next century to promote Japanese lacquerware which has been fostered in a long period of history and to make it to be used daily and more casually.
We are planning to develop various products including lacquerware in collaboration with designers mainly from three prefectures in the Hokuriku region (Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui). We will spread our products to both the domestic and the overseas markets. As a start, we are going to open a showroom in Tokyo this autumn. In our online shop, we will introduce not only lacquerware but also daily products and apparels.
Because our former presidents were passionate about creating new products while continuing to respect tradition, the craftsmanship of SEIGADO has been inherited to this day. To bring the new value built on SEIGADO spirits to the future, we will never stop trying.
